Statistical-learning/Machine-learning/Data-mining: Extracting meaning from large amounts of data is cool.
Statistical Electronic Design Automation tools -
Particularly in the area of timing-analysis (ie. figuring out how fast a chip will run). Statistical timing analysis adds a probabilistic element (ie. what percent of the chips will run faster than X?)
Microprocessor testing
Does the chip work? How fast is it? What's the cheapest way to figure this out?
